Plot summary
Leonard "Spike" Johnson and Hoax Arthur Wilmoth are teenage cousins who live with Hoax's mother, Lucy Wilmoth, a domineering and overtly religious woman. Spike rides a motorcycle and has a reputation around town, while Hoax is an introverted student whom a gang of local punks bullies; Spike protects his cousin when he can. Hoax resents that he cannot stand up for himself or succeed romantically. Both boys come across a flyer for 976-EVIL, a premium-rate phone line that sells fortunes. Spike loses interest; Hoax dials it. The reporter Marty Palmer investigates the number with Hoax's teacher, Angela Martinez.
