Plot summary
Adam Lerner has never smoked, drunk or taken drugs, and he does not even have a driver's license. At twenty-seven, the Seattle public radio journalist learns from a doctor that the pain in his back comes from schwannoma neurofibrosarcoma, a malignant growth on his spine. Dr. Ross prescribes chemotherapy to shrink it before any operation can be considered. Reading about his condition online, Adam finds a survival rate of 50 percent. His mother Diane, already caring for his father Richard, who has Alzheimer's, offers to look after him, but his girlfriend Rachael has promised to do so. At the hospital, two older patients, Mitch and Alan, become friends of his, and Katherine McKay, a Ph.D. candidate, is assigned as his therapist.
