Plot summary
In Kannapolis, North Carolina, Ralph Earnhardt works at a mill and rebuilds jalopies in his garage, racing them at local events on weekends. His son Dale learns about cars beside him and wants the same life. Ralph is a minor legend of Southern stock-car racing, and Dale drops out of high school to race, then spends more than a decade trying to establish himself, tangling on the track with men like Darrell Waltrip. A family grows up alongside the racing, and in the late 1970s he breaks into NASCAR. Years afterward his son Dale Jr., at sixteen, decides he wants to race too.
