Plot summary

In Richmond, Virginia, four men at the city jail take part in a rehabilitation effort that centers on writing and recording original music. A Grammy-winning hip-hop artist from Arrested Development spends ten days working with them, helping as they shape songs and confront painful parts of their own histories. Their work unfolds in Richmond, the onetime capital of the Confederacy, where systemic racism, a growing opioid crisis, poverty across generations and few mental health services have fed a cycle of incarceration. The United States incarcerates a larger share of its population than any other country, and the men's music is presented as testimony to what that churn costs.
