Plot summary
The world government, facing a planet whose resources cannot support its population, decrees that no child may be born for thirty years; the penalty falls on the parents and the newborn alike. Fertile couples are given life-size animatronic children at Babyland, and brainwashing is used to end the wish for real ones. Russ and Carol McNeil work in a museum that recreates life in the twentieth century. Carol longs for a child, and their robot substitute does not satisfy her, so she lets her pregnancy continue rather than end it, hiding it from the authorities. Neighbors who find a couple with a real child are expected to report it, so the McNeils keep the coming baby to themselves.
