Plot summary
Frank Post and Ross Bodine work the R-Bar-R, Walt Buckman's ranch in Montana. Ross, the older of the two, has little saved for the retirement in Mexico he keeps in mind; Frank, young and tired of ranch work, wants a better life. Their employer is feuding with a neighboring sheepman, Hansen, and a saloon brawl with Hansen's men costs the two cowhands their pay. Needing money, Ross agrees to Frank's plan to rob the local bank. Ross rides the banker Joe Billings into town at gunpoint, while Frank holds Billings's wife Sada hostage at home. Ross comes back with $36,000 and gives Billings $3,000 so the ranch hands still receive their wages. Buckman sends his sons John and Paul after the pair.

- During postproduction MGM management, in particular James T. Aubrey and Douglas Netter, cut 40 minutes without Edwards' knowledge or consent. Edwards compared it to removing a leg from a chair, said Aubrey cut the heart right out of it, and quoted the pair saying the audience wants to see Ryan O'Neal.

Originally intended as a three-hour epic, the film was heavily edited by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer without Edwards' knowledge, including a reversal of the ending from a negative one to a positive one, and Edwards disowned the finished film.- Edwards disowned the finished film and later satirized his battle with the studio in his comedy S.O.B., which also starred Holden, his leading man from Wild Rovers.
