Plot summary
Carrie Stetko has spent two years as the only Deputy U.S. Marshal posted to the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, and with winter coming she plans to resign and fly home to Miami. Then a pilot, Delfy, reports a body out on the ice, and Doc Fury, the station physician, finds that Anton Weiss, one of three scientists hunting meteorites, was murdered. Staying through the storm would mean another six months in Antarctica, but Carrie keeps the case. A United Nations security agent, Robert Pryce, arrives to look into it too, saying the first murder on the continent warrants attention, and the two of them need to find the other two scientists, who may know what happened.

- Greg Rucka and Steve Lieber's comic had two women at its center, but the screenplay by Jon and Erich Hoeber wrote in a male lead opposite the heroine because the studio doubted how big an audience two female leads would draw.
- Reese Witherspoon was once set to play the marshal. Columbia put the project into turnaround by November 2002, Universal Studios picked it up and cast her, and when the rights changed hands again she fell away from the film.
- Antarctica was played by Canada: shooting started in Manitoba on 5 March 2007 with further footage in Montreal, and a set was built on the shore of Lake Winnipeg, mixing real and fake snow for a murder mystery staged in glaring sunlight.
