Plot summary
Loosely based on Anthony Burgess's 1962 novel A Clockwork Orange, with the characters' names changed, the film centers on Victor, a young delinquent who lifts weights, dances and tortures people. His friend Scum Baby calls the police after Victor strikes him, and Victor is given a choice between jail and a behavioral change. He picks the treatment. The film was shot in black and white at a single location, and its soundtrack includes songs by Martha and the Vandellas, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones and The Isley Brothers.

- Vinyl was the first film adaptation of the novel that Stanley Kubrick turned into A Clockwork Orange six years later.
- Warhol had planned Vinyl as a purely male-cast film built around Gerard Malanga, but when the model Edie Sedgwick coincidentally turned up for photography he gave her a last-minute role.
- Some of the extras in Vinyl had no connection to the plot and did not even realize they were being filmed.
- Vinyl is often called Edie Sedgwick's first film appearance, but she had already played a non-speaking role in Warhol's earlier movie Horse.
- Vinyl was shot with a 16mm black-and-white Auricon camera that barely moved on its stand, in a single corner of Warhol's Factory.
