Plot summary
A group of big-city teenagers crashes their car at a roadblock in a rainstorm and hikes into Hainesville, California, where Fred hopes to find Nancy. Nancy is with her boyfriend Mike, whose younger brother, called Genius, has been mixing chemicals in the basement. Genius accidentally makes a substance he names Goo, and a dog and two ducks grow enormous. The visitors dry off in the local theater and go to a nearby club, where the giant ducks turn up, and Mike keeps the reason a secret. Fred and his friends see profit in it, scheme to learn the secret and escape with a sample. Back at the theater, Fred divides the Goo among the gang, and each of them swallows a piece and grows over thirty feet tall.

- Composer and arranger Jack Nitzsche's instrumental theme was released as "The Last Race" on Reprise Records months before the film came out, and Quentin Tarantino later used it as the main title music for Death Proof, his segment of Grindhouse, in 2007.
- Alan Caillou's original script had the sheriff's deputy, played by Rance Howard, stepped on by the giants; the scene never made the final edit and no known footage of it exists.
- Beau Bridges was about 18 or 19 when he made the film and took the part so seriously that he rewrote his own lines, hoping to speak for his generation.
- The "goo" that makes the teenagers grow to giant size was a simple mixture of angel food cake mix with pink-colored dye.
- The scene where the giants gather outside the Hainesville theater was shot on the Courthouse Square lot at Universal Studios, a set later used for Back to the Future and Gremlins.
- Village of the Giants was featured in a 1994 Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode that was dedicated to Frank Zappa, and during which TV's Frank was fired and then rehired.
