Plot summary
Police search for Iwao Enokizu, and bulletins carrying his face go out. He has already tricked two men, killed them and taken their money. He arrives in another city and settles into an inn where a prostitute can be had, telling the woman who keeps it, Haru, that he lectures at Kyoto University. A prostitute believes the newcomer is the man on the bulletins, but her work keeps her from the police. Enokizu grew up violent and rebellious, and his father Shizuo, a Catholic, saw his fishing boats taken by the Japanese Navy during the 1930s. After the war Enokizu served a prison term for fraud; his wife Kazuko, drawn to Shizuo, divorced him, and Shizuo urged her to marry him again.
