Plot summary
In 1977, Robyn Davidson arrives in Alice Springs with a plan to cross 2,700 kilometers of Australian desert to the Indian Ocean, accompanied by her dog, Diggity, and four dromedary camels. To prepare, she works for farmers, learning to handle camels in exchange for board and animals. Friends who visit introduce her to Rick Smolan, a National Geographic photographer. When she says she lacks funds for the trip, Rick suggests she approach the magazine. The magazine buys the rights to her story and funds her journey, on the condition that Rick takes the photographs. Robyn is frustrated by Rick and by his photographs.
