Plot summary
Linda Henry lives in a North Carolina town with her husband Henry, a doctor whose free hours go to his model trains. She meets Martin, a hitchhiker who grew up in England though he was born in North Carolina, and who has come to America to find his birthmother. He turns up outside her house, then tells her while she swims that he may be the baby she gave up as a teenager. She does not believe him until he describes the housekeeper who raised him and once worked for her family. She answers with motherly warmth.

- The film was first set up to be directed by Joseph Losey for the BBC, with Vanessa Redgrave, Anthony Higgins and Lee Marvin cast and filming due to start in Texas in August 1983. Days before shooting, the BBC insisted it be shot in 16mm rather than 35mm, American financing pulled out and the production was canceled.
- HandMade Films' Denis O'Brien was encouraging about the film while it was being shot, but on seeing the finished film he was alarmed by the incest plot and demanded cuts; some were made.
