Plot summary
Jerry Mitchell and his sister Brei have the house to themselves while their parents are away, and at Weaver High the morning talk is about Buddy Revell, a new transfer student from a continuation school whom the other students call violent. Jerry's best friend, Vincent Costello, edits the school newspaper, and the journalism teacher assigns Jerry an interview with the newcomer. In the restroom Jerry clumsily introduces himself, annoys Buddy, and tells him to disregard the interview request, then taps his arm. Buddy, who cannot stand being touched, throws Jerry against a wall and says the two will fight in the school parking lot at three o'clock, warning that running away or reporting it will only make things worse. Jerry spends the day trying to find a way out of the fight.
