Plot summary
A nuclear physicist at the United States Atomic Energy Commission in Washington, D.C., Dr. Allan Fields also serves an unnamed foreign power as a spy. On his case officer's orders, he copies classified documents with a Minox camera and sends the microfilm through a chain of couriers to New York City and onward overseas. One courier dies in a Manhattan traffic accident with a canister of undeveloped film in his hand; the FBI develops it and draws up a list of suspects inside the AEC. Agents lead away the custodian of the document Fields photographed, then appear to clear him, and attention shifts to the men beneath him. Fields is one of them, and a telegram from his case officer orders him to destroy the evidence and move to a safe house in New York City.
