Plot summary
Tom Ripley tends a lavatory in Manhattan, and at a garden party he borrows a Princeton jacket and plays the piano. Herbert Greenleaf builds ships and thinks Tom went to Princeton alongside his son, Dickie. He gives Tom $1,000 and sends him to Italy to talk the young man into coming home. Sailing first class, Tom passes himself off as Dickie and befriends the socialite Meredith Logue. In the seaside village of Mongibello he introduces himself to Dickie and to Dickie's girlfriend, Marge Sherwood, as a former Princeton classmate, and settles into their extravagant life. Freddie Miles, a wealthy friend of Dickie's, distrusts Tom and shows him contempt.
