Plot summary
Disturbing dreams have troubled Kay since she was a child, and they have grown more frequent, while the quality of her painting has declined. Her husband David, her brother Eric and Eric's wife Brooke arrange a vacation for her on a small island off the Georgia coast. Their pilot, Marsh, tells them an Atlantic hurricane has shifted toward the island, sets them down and leaves. The four find the island deserted, a derelict resort town. Kay says it is the place she has dreamed of since childhood and that staying there puts them in danger. With the hurricane keeping them on the island, the others try to calm her.

- The Slayer was seized and banned by the BBFC in the UK and placed on the "video nasty" list in October 1983, under the then-upcoming Video Recordings Act 1984, which required all video content to carry a classification; it was removed from the list in April 1985.
- Writer-director J. S. Cardone was working at a liquor store in Los Angeles in 1981 while trying to break into the film business, and pitched The Slayer to producer William R. Ewing; The International Picture Company, an independent studio in Atlanta, agreed to produce it for about $750,000.
- Because the studio was based in Georgia, the crew scouted the state and settled on Tybee Island, east of Savannah, which was then largely uninhabited and dilapidated and, Cardone recalled, matched the vision he had while writing the script.
