Plot summary
Rama, a rookie with the Mobile Brigade Corps, is part of a twenty-man squad sent into a Jakarta apartment block before dawn. The building belongs to Tama Riyadi, a crime lord who rents rooms to criminals and addicts and shelters them, and who keeps his lieutenants, Andi and Mad Dog, close. The officers move through the lower floors without being seen. Two young lookouts on the sixth floor catch sight of them, one is shot, and the other sounds the alarm. Tama summons reinforcements, who take out the officers posted outside the block and wreck the squad's vehicle. His men reclaim the floors below, the lights go off, and the officers still inside are left with little ammunition and no way out.

- Joe Taslim, a former judo champion and a fan of Merantau, contacted director Gareth Evans through Facebook for their next project; Evans came across a photo of Taslim in a SWAT uniform and had him audition in choreography and drama, which he aced to win the part.
- Gareth Evans and his producers spent a year and a half on Berandal, a large-scale prison gangster film with a teaser trailer already shot, then ran out of money and turned it into the simpler, smaller-budget story that became The Raid.
- To avoid the cost of real firearms, every gun in The Raid was an Airsoft replica, and the muzzle flashes, the guns' cycling actions and the ejecting shell cases were all added digitally.
