Plot summary
Melodye Amerson arrives in a remote valley to teach in a community that has isolated itself from civilization. The residents she meets seem stern, secretive and opposed to pleasure, and every game, every bit of fun and every activity she proposes is forbidden to the children. She is unsettled by how little her students will say about their lives. Valancy, an elder of the community, advises her to stay, because she senses that things in the valley are about to change and that Melodye is part of that change. Two children slip away into the woods to play, and Melodye follows them.
