Plot summary

Mélanie Prouvost is ten, the daughter of butchers, and a gifted pianist. Her parents enter her for the Conservatory entrance examination, where she plays before a jury headed by the pianist Ariane Fouchécourt. An autograph Ariane signs for an admirer during the audition breaks Mélanie's concentration and she fails. Years later, Mélanie finishes high school and takes a placement at the law office of Mr. Fouchécourt, Ariane's husband. Hearing that he wants someone to look after his son Tristan, she offers herself for the job and travels to the family's country house. Ariane, who no longer recognizes the girl she once distracted, takes her on as her page turner.
