Plot summary

In 1893 a young Arab girl stows away on a ship to Galveston, Texas, with her mother, whose magical bracelet leaves her helpless while a malevolent jinn slaughters everyone aboard. The girl flees with the bracelet and a brass lamp. Years later, thieves break into the mansion of the elderly woman who had kept the pair, and the lamp reaches the Houston Museum of Natural Science as evidence, where Dr. Bressling catalogs it and dates it to 3500 BC. Alex, the teenage daughter of the museum's archaeologist, slips the bracelet onto her wrist and cannot take it off. Her class visits the museum the next day, and that night she talks her boyfriend and friends into staying inside after closing.
