Plot summary
An object like a missile appears in nearby space, and a European nation fires a rocket at it. The explosion only diverts it into an orbit around Earth, five miles up, where the heat of its engine scorches the land beneath. Radar on the DEW Line sights it heading for the continent, and the jets sent to intercept it are destroyed. Dr. David Loring works at the Havenbrook Atomic Laboratory near New York City on a hydrogen warhead for the Jove rocket, and the job has already cost him his wedding to his assistant, Joan Woods. The missile is projected to pass over New York, and American and Canadian authorities begin civil defense preparations.
