Plot summary
In 1947, Aung San Suu Kyi is a young girl whose father, Aung San, led Burma to independence; armed men in uniform kill him soon after. Four decades later she lives in England with her husband, the writer Michael Aris, and their sons. She flies to Burma to be near her mother, who is ill, and finds that the country still remembers her father. At the hospital she meets people wounded during the Tatmadaw's crackdown on the 8888 Uprising. Convinced that Burma needs political change, she joins the reform movement and takes on the role of a symbol in support of democracy.

- During the shooting of the film, news broke that Aung San Suu Kyi's house arrest had been lifted, and Luc Besson hesitated to believe what he saw on TV because it looked so much like his recent footage.
- On 22 June 2011 Michelle Yeoh wanted to visit Suu Kyi a second time but was deported from Burma, reportedly over her portrayal of Aung San Suu Kyi.
- Some of the extras re-enacted their own personal memories, and once or twice filming had to stop because Michelle Yeoh's performance of a speech in Burmese caused outbursts of emotion among extras who had originally heard Suu Kyi.
- Despite always having been petite, Michelle Yeoh lost weight to embody Suu Kyi, whose son had stressed that his mother was slimmer than Yeoh.
