Plot summary
Mark Whitacre holds a vice presidency at a division of Archer Daniels Midland in Decatur, Illinois, a company that makes lysine, a corn derivative, among other products. A virus in the plant harms lysine production, and a Japanese competitor telephones Mark, saying a mole inside ADM working for that competitor infected it, and that he will give the name for $10 million. ADM brings in the FBI. Ginger, Mark's wife, urges him to tell the agents he knows of price fixing: ADM officials and rivals have met to set lysine prices. The FBI asks Mark to help gather proof, and he begins taping company meetings with hidden surveillance equipment. Mark holds a naive view of what the arrangement means for his job at ADM.
