Plot summary

At the Theta Pi sorority house, the seniors are packing up after graduation when Mrs. Slater, the house mother, orders them out by morning. Vicki talks Katie Rose into staying for a going-away party anyway. After Mrs. Slater bursts in on Vicki and her boyfriend Rick and rips up Vicki's waterbed with her cane, Vicki proposes a revenge prank with a gun and the cane. Mrs. Slater's doctor has warned that she is nearing a breakdown. Katie argues against the plan and the others outvote her. The stunt ends with Mrs. Slater in the pool, and rather than send for an ambulance the girls hide her. Someone who saw the night begins stalking them.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The House on Sorority Row (1982)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • The sorority house was a foreclosed property in Pikesville that director Mark Rosman found, which let the crew film there cheaply; when they arrived, two squatters were living in the house and were allowed to work as video assistants.
  • The film began with a $300,000 budget, but the production ran out of money midway through filming, and writer-director Mark Rosman had to secure a loan from a cousin in Los Angeles to finish it.
  • Lois Kelso Hunt, who plays house mother Mrs. Slater, has her performance entirely dubbed, because director Mark Rosman found her natural speaking voice not "scary" or husky enough for the part.
  • SPOILERDistributor Film Ventures felt Mark Rosman's original ending, in which Katey is found floating dead in the pool as killer Eric's final victim, was too downbeat, so she survives in the finished film.
  • Quentin Tarantino chose The House on Sorority Row for his inaugural film festival in 1997, screening it alongside horror films such as Don't Go in the House (1980) and The Beyond (1981).
  • The film is mentioned in the 1997 slasher sequel Scream 2, along with four other college-themed slasher films: The Dorm That Dripped Blood, Splatter University, Graduation Day and Final Exam.
