Plot summary
After their parents die in a car accident, Ruby Baker and her younger brother Rhett are taken in by Terry and Erin Glass, former neighbors who become the siblings' guardians. Erin works as a physician, Terry sells cars, and they live in a large house of glass in Malibu. They must share a room and attend a public school instead of the private one they left. Rhett is given expensive video game consoles, something his parents had not allowed. Ruby becomes uncomfortable with the attention Terry shows her, and Erin scolds her for a bad attitude after listening to a phone call. Ruby sees Erin inject herself with medication and is told Erin has diabetes. She brings her concerns to the lawyer handling her parents' estate, who is doubtful and sends a social worker.
