Plot summary
Kanji Lalji Mehta, who sells Hindu idols in Mumbai and scorns the rituals around him, loses his shop to an earthquake that destroys nothing else. The insurance company rejects his claim, calling the damage an act of God. Kanji decides to sue God, and no lawyer will take the case until Hanif Qureshi, a Muslim attorney, helps him file it; Kanji argues for himself in court. Notices are sent to the spiritual leaders Siddheshwar Maharaj, Gopi Maiyya and Leeladhar Swamy as God's representatives on earth. The lawsuit brings threats from religious extremists, the bank takes his house, and his family leaves him. Krishna Vasudev Yadav, who says he is a real estate agent, rescues him and lets him stay.
