Plot summary
Dr. Dave Fielding is in charge of a NASA project that lands a robotic surveyor on Mars, and when the rover is destroyed minutes later by what looks like a high energy surge, he feels oddly disconnected. He flies to California to join his wife, Claire, and their children, Rocky and Judi, who are staying in the guest house of a mansion belonging to Claire's family. His long absences have strained the marriage, and at first the tension between them keeps the family from noticing the figures, identical to themselves, that they glimpse around the estate. The main gate will not open when they try to drive out.
