Plot summary
Martin Gordon is a sheriff's deputy in Angel County, California. He and his wife Brett are driving when they meet his uncle, Sheriff Ben, and the three of them go to look at a reported plane crash. They find a forest ranger's truck and hat and a craft shaped like a camping trailer. The creature that came out of it has already gone. Col. James Caldwell arrives with a unit of troops, and two soldiers who enter the craft report a second creature tethered inside. The next day Dr. Bradford, an authority on space emissions, arrives to direct the examination of the craft and its analog devices. The escaped creature moves slowly across the county, approaching and eating the people it comes upon.

- The film's special-effects creator, unpaid for his work, allegedly stole the original creature costume the day before shooting was to begin, forcing director Vic Savage and his remaining crew to assemble a poorly constructed replica.
- Director and star Vic Savage was repeatedly sued before the film's release and, facing a possible indictment on fraud charges, vanished; he never worked in film again and reportedly died of liver failure in 1975 at the age of 41.
- Unable to pay for basic sound transfers or post-production dubbing, Vic Savage hired radio news reader Larry Burrell, whose other credits include They Saved Hitler's Brain, to narrate the entire film.
- After Savage disappeared, the film's main financier, William Thourlby, who plays Dr. Bradford in it, acquired the remaining film stock and commissioned an edited version to recoup his investment, adding constant narration because sound reels were missing.
- Robert Silliphant is credited as writer, but the story was written by his younger brother Allan; Savage used the name of their brother, television writer Stirling Silliphant of Naked City and Route 66, to attract investors, reportedly offering them small parts in the film.
- Writer Allan Silliphant quit the production after clashing with director Vic Savage, who did not share his view that the story was meant to be outrageous, and out of fear the film would damage his family's reputation, especially that of his brother Stirling.
- In 1994 The Creeping Terror was featured in Episode #606 of Mystery Science Theater 3000, whose cast, crew and viewers became noted critics of the film.
