Plot summary
In Dakar, two teenage cousins, Seydou and Moussa, hope to leave poverty behind and plan a journey to Italy. Local men advise against it, and Seydou's mother does not want him to go. After visiting a local shaman, the boys set out in the night and travel to Mali, where a man selling false passports at a rest stop supplies them with papers. A soldier at the border spots the forgery and takes a bribe to let them pass. In Niger, the cousins hand over money to join a group heading across the desert toward Libya, riding in a pickup truck and then continuing on foot with a guide.
