Plot summary
Glenn Cameron and Elaine, his fiancée, spot a light in the woods near Riverdale, Illinois, and come upon dead animals and a metal structure shaped like a rocket's nose cone. Two days later a committee in Washington reviews army footage of the object and notes several killings in the area. Senator Walter K. Powers and Dr. Paul Kettering, who leads the committee's investigation, travel to Riverdale, where Glenn meets them because his father, the mayor, is missing. Kettering examines the structure, which resists damage and holds a maze of tunnels inside. Alice Summers, the mayor's secretary, records his test results, and Dr. Wyler assists him. Residents and local officials come under the control of something inside the object, and calls out of Riverdale go unanswered.

- Science fiction author Robert A. Heinlein sued over The Brain Eaters, claiming it was based on his 1951 novel The Puppet Masters; he asked for $150,000 in damages and Roger Corman settled out of court for $5,000, with Heinlein getting no screen credit. The lawsuit also halted actor John Payne's plan to film the novel.
- The Brain Eaters was shot over six days on a budget of $26,000; director Bruno VeSota had approached Roger Corman with the script, and Corman helped raise the financing and arranged distribution through American International Pictures.
- In 1997, Brad O. Nelson started the Brain Eaters Font Company, a division of Font Diner named after the film and specializing in novelty typography inspired by vintage pop culture, B-movies, horror and science fiction.
