Plot summary
Her father abandons the family when Audrey Hepburn is a child, and she is sent to a boarding school in England, where ballet becomes her passion. When Britain enters the war she returns to her mother Ella in the neutral Netherlands, and the German invasion brings years of hardship; liberation brings UNICEF supplies to a starving population. Afterward she studies ballet in London but lacks the talent for a prima ballerina's life, so she performs in musicals and revues and receives small film parts. She becomes engaged to the wealthy industrialist James Hanson. In 1951, while filming Monte Carlo Baby, Colette notices her and offers her a part in Gigi on Broadway.
