Plot summary

At A-Chord Records, producer Coleman Buckmaster, known as the Golden Ear, is in the middle of sessions for the debut album of the Group. Carlton James, who runs the label, tells him to put that record aside. A-Chord has signed the Pages, Velour, Gary and Franklyn, a wholesome family act that James presents as old-fashioned values. Buckmaster hears a soulless sound and wants nothing to do with them, though he would rather be finishing the Group's record. His contract leaves him no choice: he has to take their flat demo, a song called Joy, Joy, Joy, and shape it into a hit.
