Tarlabasi and Me (2015) on Netflix

Plot summary

In the center of Istanbul, the originally Armenian district of Tarlabasi is home to poor people of many origins. Mustafa chose it because it is easy to hide in, and he earns his living by rummaging through trash. Young people mobilize to defend Gezi Park, and real estate speculation is slowly destroying the city center. The residents wait for their neighborhood to be handed to wreckers, clinging to it, content with food and sleep. At night, police crush young protesters in the alleys while Mustafa and his neighbors watch without illusions. Prison has made him a philosopher; he takes what little he has and does not complain about a fate he does not believe in. By day, backhoes work to make the city center match its advertising image.
