Plot summary
By day Heisaku works at a distribution center. In the evening he studies architecture, and his hobby is peering into gaps, between buildings or in stone walls. Lately his greatest pleasure is the gap in the curtains at his window, which looks into the room of Fumio, who lives in the apartment building next door. Fumio is a second-year law student at the same university. She lives in a thirty-year-old building, gets drunk easily, and leaves her own curtains slightly open. Fumio has noticed Heisaku through his gap: she watches his room and takes photographs of him, which her friend Hana develops at the photo studio where she works.
