Plot summary
A mosaic of educational material assembled by the Canadian Academy of Erotic Enquiry documents an experiment built on the theories of Dr. Luther Stringfellow, who is never seen on screen. Seven young adults volunteer to take part, submitting to brain surgery that strips them of speech while leaving them able to communicate telepathically. The Academy encourages them to build those abilities through sexual exploration, expecting that groups of telepaths bound in polymorphous sexual relationships will replace the old family unit and stabilize society. An unseen group of students watches the results. Among the arrivals is a young man in a black cloak, who joins the volunteers at the Academy.

- Cronenberg shot the film in black and white and without synchronized sound because the Arriflex 35 he used was too noisy for it; he got that camera through a deferred rental.
