Plot summary
In 1991, with the Cold War ending and a trade agreement with China close, the CIA learns that its operative Tom Bishop has been seized at a prison in Suzhou run by the People's Liberation Army, after an operation the Agency did not sanction. He is to be executed within twenty-four hours unless the American government claims him. The President is due in China soon, and the Agency's executives would rather not risk the deal. On the last day of his career, veteran case officer Nathan Muir, who met Bishop in Vietnam in 1975 and later recruited him in Berlin, is summoned to Langley to be interviewed about their history. Unknown to them, Harry Duncan, the station chief in Hong Kong, had already told Muir of the arrest.
