Plot summary
Alex Shaw has not been straight with his girlfriend, Annie Porter: he told her he worked beach patrol, and she learns he is on the LAPD's SWAT team. She had stopped dating police officers after what happened with a bus in Los Angeles, so Alex offers a Caribbean cruise aboard the Seabourn Legend as an apology. A diamond dealers' association has booked passage and stored its stones in the ship's vault. Then the liner loses its communications and someone else takes control of the vessel, and the couple, on vacation, work with the crew to get the ship and its passengers back.

- Keanu Reeves was offered $12 million to play Jack Traven again and said no: he disliked the script, was comfortable after Speed and made The Devil's Advocate instead. He said Fox was furious and spread the false story that he left to tour with his band Dogstar.
- Sandra Bullock first turned the sequel down and only agreed as a way of getting her drama Hope Floats financed. Her reported fee for returning as Annie Porter was $11 to $13 million.
- Bullock's first suggestion to replace Reeves was Matthew McConaughey, who passed. She then put forward Jason Patric, and Jan de Bont, wary of an unknown, was reminded by Fox that she and Reeves had been unknowns before Speed.
- For the crash de Bont had a $5 million, 35-building town built at Marigot on Saint Martin, copying the local architecture. A hurricane flattened the set while it was still going up, so it had to be rebuilt with hurricane-proof buildings.
- The five minutes in which the liner plows into the town cost $25 million, about a quarter of the whole budget, and set records as the largest and the most expensive stunt ever filmed.
- On the second day of filming Jason Patric was thrown about 30 feet through the air off a Ducati 916 and landed on a small bush. Sandra Bullock said the crash was bad enough that he "should be dead".
