Plot summary
Eight years after a motorboat strikes her family on a lake, Angela survives as a withdrawn girl who lives with her aunt Martha Thomas and her cousin Ricky Thomas. Martha sends the two to Camp Arawak for the summer. Angela's silence makes her an easy mark for camper Judy and counselor Meg, though Ronnie Angelo and Susie treat her kindly. Kenny and Mike mock her as well, and Ricky and his friend Paul confront them; Paul befriends Angela. The head cook, Artie, tries to assault the girl, and Ricky intervenes. Artie is then badly scalded by boiling water, and camp owner Mel Kostic calls it an accident.
