Plot summary
Allison Jones designs software in New York City and is engaged to Sam Rawson. When Sam's ex-wife calls and Allison learns he slept with her, she ends the engagement and sends him away. Her neighbor Graham Knox lends her his spare room for the night. Mitchell Myerson, who owns a fashion house, presses Allison to lower the price of her new program, and she agrees because he is her only client. She advertises in a newspaper for a woman to share the apartment. Hedra Carlson comes in while the front door still stands open, a broken faucet soaks them both, and Allison takes her in. The two grow close: Allison helps Hedra buy nicer clothes, Hedra gives her earrings, and Hedra says her twin was stillborn. Hedra keeps a shoebox out of Allison's view.
