Plot summary

On Sirius 6-B, someone switches on a distress beacon in an abandoned communication bunker. Two months later an Alliance Command rescue team reaches the planet aboard the ship Medusa, sent because nothing has been heard from the world since Joseph Hendrickson died and the Screamers, the weapons built there, are believed to have run out of battery. A planet-wide solar meteor strike is coming, which gives Commander Andy Sexton and his crew six days. Pilot Olof Soderquist stays behind to monitor the ship while the others move toward the signal. In a hillside bunker they come upon a Screamer factory that has gone dormant, where the machines turned parts of human victims into raw material, and they spend the night inside. Sexton charges a Screamer to pull its schematics.
