Walter Murch

Walter Murch is an American film editor, sound designer, director and writer who started out editing and mixing sound for Francis Ford Coppola on The Rain People (1969), then worked on George Lucas's THX 1138 and American Graffiti and Coppola's The Godfather. He cut picture and mixed sound on The Conversation (1974), earning an Academy Award nomination for sound, and on Apocalypse Now he won his first Oscar and became the first person credited as Sound Designer. His three Academy Award wins come from nine nominations, six for editing and three for sound mixing. In 1996 he took Oscars for both the editing and the sound mixing of The English Patient, the first editing Oscar given to an electronically cut film, and his work on Cold Mountain (2003) brought another nomination. He wrote the book In the Blink of an Eye and directed one feature, Return to Oz (1985).
