Twiggy

Biography

Twiggy is an English model who also built careers as an actress and singer, becoming a leading face of London's Swinging Sixties. The Daily Express named her The Face of 1966, and she soon modeled in France, Japan and the United States as one of the first international supermodels. She retired from modeling in 1970 and turned to entertainment. Her first leading film role, in The Boy Friend (1971), brought her two Golden Globe Awards, and her self-titled album (1976) reached number 33 on the UK Albums Chart. She made her Broadway debut in My One and Only (1983), earning a Tony nomination, then appeared in Club Paradise (1986) and Madame Sousatzka (1988). She judged America's Next Top Model from 2005 to 2007, and in 2019 she was appointed a dame for services to fashion, the arts and charity.

Behind the award
Twiggy played Polly Browne in Ken Russell's The Boy Friend, a 1971 adaptation of Sandy Wilson's musical pastiche. Her first leading part earned her two Golden Globe Awards in 1972, for New Star of the Year and Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy.
Big break
Twiggy got her start at 16 when hairdresser Leonard of Mayfair cut her hair for test shots, and Daily Express journalist Deirdre McSharry saw the photos in his salon and arranged more.
