Sylvia Earle
Biography
Sylvia Earle is a marine biologist and oceanographer from the United States who has also worked as an explorer, writer, and lecturer. Born in New Jersey in 1935, she spent her childhood partly in Dunedin, Florida. She studied at Florida State University and Duke University, where she earned a doctorate in phycology in 1966. After research posts at Harvard, she was turned down for the 1969 Tektite Project but was chosen a year later to lead Tektite II's first female aquanaut crew. She became the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's first chief scientist and the first woman in that role. In 1979 she made an untethered JIM suit dive near Oahu and set a women's depth record of 381 meters. She founded Mission Blue in 2009. Her honors include a 2009 TED Prize and a 2013 Hubbard Medal. She appeared in the 2021 documentary Seaspiracy.
