Biography

Sutton Foster is an American actress, singer, and dancer known for her work in Broadway musicals. Born in Statesboro, Georgia, and raised in Michigan, she began performing as a teenager and left high school to tour in The Will Rogers Follies. After touring in Grease and appearing in Les Misérables, she took over the title role in Thoroughly Modern Millie, which opened on Broadway in 2002 and brought her a Tony Award. She won a second Tony for Anything Goes in 2011, and she was nominated for Little Women, The Drowsy Chaperone, Shrek the Musical, Violet, and The Music Man. On television, she led Bunheads and Younger, earning Critics' Choice nominations for both. Her screen credits include Gravy (2015) and The Angriest Man in Brooklyn (2014). Her stage work also includes Young Frankenstein and Once Upon a Mattress.

  1. Big break

    Foster was cast as Millie Dilmount in Thoroughly Modern Millie only nine days before the first preview, after original leading lady Kristin Chenoweth left for a television series and her replacement, Erin Dilly, departed the production.

  2. A first

    In April 2015, Foster gave her first performance at Carnegie Hall, joined by guests Joshua Henry and Megan McGinnis. The show belonged to her tour An Evening With Sutton Foster: Broadway In Concert, which ran into 2016.

  3. Early training

    Starting in January 2010, Foster taught a master class for a Spring Semester at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts Undergraduate Department of Drama. In May it finished with a cabaret show at Joe's Pub called "From Rodgers To Heart".

  4. Beyond film

    Ghostlight Records put out Foster's first solo album, Wish, in February 2009. Its songs cover jazz, pop, cabaret and Broadway styles.
