Sally Payne

Biography

Sally Payne was an American actress who came to films after posing as a model for artists, taking a bit part as a tourist in Hollywood Hobbies (1935). She went on to become a leading player in B features, most of them westerns, and also turned up in comedy shorts made by RKO Radio Pictures, appearing opposite Edgar Kennedy and Leon Errol as their screen wives, plus several Pete Smith subjects for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. She was best remembered as Calamity Jane in Young Bill Hickok (1940), a Roy Rogers western, and Robin Hood of the Pecos (1941) gave her the part of Belle Starr. Her parts were usually tomboys who helped men rather than leaning on them, wearing men's clothing and handling weapons, horses and stagecoaches, and by the end of her association with Rogers her billing had risen from supporting player to first-billed actress. After leaving acting she ran a bookstore, painted in oils and illustrated children's books.
