Biography

Ruth Attaway was an American actress who worked on stage and in film, born in Greenville, Mississippi, and studied sociology at the University of Illinois. She broke into Broadway in 1936 with You Can't Take It with You, a play that had won the Pulitzer Prize. She was the first person to direct the New York Players Guild, and from 1954 to 1955 she played Anna Hicks in the National Theater production of Mrs. Patterson. From 1964 to 1967 she worked with the Repertory Society of Lincoln Center. Her screen debut came as Moll in The President's Lady (1953), and her film work later included Raintree County (1957), Conrack (1974), Being There (1979) and Porgy and Bess (1959). On television she played Delia in The Bermuda Depths (1978), and between acting jobs she also worked as a social worker.
