First role
Late in the run of the Australian espionage drama Hunter, in 1968, Mullinar took the leading role, but he appeared in just eight episodes because the series was canceled.
Early training
In mid-1968, Mullinar joined the Independent Theatre troupe after first appearing with the Australian Theatre for Young People. With that troupe he took part in productions of Wait Until Dark, Uncle Vanya and Tango.
