Rob Bottin

Biography

Rob Bottin is an American prosthetic makeup and special effects artist who collaborated with John Carpenter, Paul Verhoeven and David Fincher. Born in El Monte, California, a suburb of Los Angeles, he sent a drawing to Rick Baker as a teenager and was invited to apprentice with him, including on the Cantina creatures in Star Wars. The Howling gave him his first solo break, creating a man-to-werewolf transformation. He made the physical makeup for Carpenter's The Fog (1980) and appeared in it as Captain Blake, then spent more than a year on The Thing, producing nearly every creature effect. He designed the RoboCop suit, and his work on Legend brought a Best Makeup Oscar nomination, while Total Recall earned him a Special Achievement Academy Award. He has two BAFTA nominations and two Saturn Awards, and further credits include Basic Instinct, Se7en, Fight Club, Innerspace and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. He is thought to have retired in 2002.

Did you know?!

  1. First role

At 14, Bottin mailed an autograph request with an intricate drawing to Rick Baker, a well-known special make-up effects artist. Baker invited him to talk about monsters and later offered him an apprenticeship on films, including the Star Wars Cantina scene creatures.

  2. Big break

Bottin got his first big solo break on The Howling when Rick Baker's schedule was busy with another production, and his man-to-werewolf transformation appeared five months before Baker's similar scene in An American Werewolf in London.

  3. Big break

Rob Bottin got cinematographer Dean Cundey to make the introduction to director John Carpenter, and Carpenter then gave him the job of creating the special makeup effects for The Fog in 1980. Bottin also played Captain Blake in that film.

  4. Behind the award

For Paul Verhoeven's RoboCop, Bottin created and constructed the title character's suit. His special effects work on Verhoeven's Total Recall brought him a Special Achievement Academy Award.

  5. A change of course

Bottin is thought to have left the industry in 2002 as filmmakers turned to CGI for action and horror, though he came back briefly in 2014 to handle practical work on Game of Thrones.
