Rick Danko

Biography

Rick Danko was a Canadian musician and songwriter best known as singer and bassist for the Band. He was born in Blayney, Ontario, one of four brothers in a musical family, and was playing country music and R&B in local bands as a teenager before Ronnie Hawkins hired him, first as a guitarist and soon afterward as the Hawks' bassist. In the 1960s he backed Bob Dylan with the Hawks, who became the Band and released seven studio albums between 1968 and 1977, with Danko taking lead vocals on songs such as When You Awake and Unfaithful Servant. The group's farewell concert was filmed as The Last Waltz (1978). He made solo records and reunited with the Band from 1983, sang Pink Floyd songs in Roger Waters's The Wall Concert in Berlin (1990), and in 1994 the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted him as a member of the Band. He died in 1999.

Did you know?!

  1. A first

Rick Danko was the first member of the Band to record a solo album, signing with Arista Records after Clive Davis offered him a contract following the Band's farewell concert.

  2. First role

Hawkins brought Danko into the Hawks to play rhythm guitar. When Rebel Paine lost his job as the band's bassist, Hawkins had Danko learn bass, and by September 1960 Danko held that spot.

  3. Behind the camera

Danko was the one who located the pink house on Parnassus Lane in Saugerties, New York, later called Big Pink. The Band's sessions with Dylan there in the basement, from June to October 1967, produced recordings released in 1975 as The Basement Tapes.

  4. Beyond film

In 1990, Danko performed in Roger Waters's staging of The Wall in Berlin, singing Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" with Van Morrison, Waters, and Levon Helm, and "Mother" with Helm and Sinead O'Connor.

  5. A change of course

By 17, Danko had been a musician for five years and had left Simcoe Composite School to work days as a butcher. He got his band The Starlights booked as the opening act for Ronnie Hawkins.
