American actor Richard Speight Jr. was born in Nashville, Tennesese. He attended Montgomery Bell Academy and the University of Southern California's School of Theater, where he graduated cum laude. He began his acting career in the late 1980s, appearing in television movies like Love Leads the Way: A True Story, and Goodbye, Miss 4th of July. In 1990, Richard Speight Jr. landed the role of Leon on several episodes of Elvis. He next appeared on China Beach, Matlock and on the series Running the Halls. He also had a role on ER, and later played Miller West on Party of Five. In 1996, Speight was cast on the hit film Independence Day, playing the character of Ed.
